The floating lantern off St Wolfgang is the image the Wolfgangsee's Advent is built around, and it suits anyone who likes lights on water. The organizer gives no lighting hours, so plan your visit for dusk on a market day.
A lantern 16 metres tall floats on the Wolfgangsee in front of St Wolfgang and carries the ORF Peace Light. The Salzkammergut tourist board calls it the landmark of the Wolfgangsee's Advent. You see it best from the Uferplatz in the village or from the deck of a boat. On Wednesdays the boats run special lantern cruises.
Across the lake in St Gilgen an 11-metre candle stands on the shore, and Strobl hangs a six-metre comet over its nativity village. The boats link all three villages on market days, so you can see the lights one after another in an evening.
Worth knowing
- Children up to 14 ride the Wolfgangsee boats free with an adult on Advent Sundays.
