Salzburg Krampus Run
Lauf der Krampusse47°48′ N 13°03′ EFolk customDec 5, 2026Seasonal
Come to the Domplatz on 5 December if you want to see Salzburg's Krampus figures in full costume at night. It's loud and crowded, and small children may find it frightening.
Krampus is the horned, fur-clad companion of St Nicholas in Alpine custom, and on 5 December his groups take over the stage in front of the cathedral. The organizer gives about 19:00 as the start and marks the time as provisional. On the afternoon of 6 December St Nicholas comes to the market with a children's Krampus group at 15:30, and the Christkind follows at 16:00.
Masked runners come right up to the crowd, and some will touch or crowd spectators at the front. Stand further back if you or your children don't want contact, and tell children beforehand what they'll see. Nobody should grab at the costumes or masks.
Worth knowing
- Bring younger children to the 6 December afternoon visit instead, when St Nicholas leads and the children's Krampus group is gentler.
- Check the market's website on the day, because the 19:00 start is marked provisional.
