Christmas Eve in Salzburg Cathedral pairs the late Mass with Mozart's Organ Solo Mass, sung by the cathedral's own musicians. It's a Mass first, so come to take part quietly, and expect the nave to fill.

The cathedral marks Christmas Eve twice. Pontifical Vespers at 15:00 is sung by the seminary's chant schola with the cathedral musicians. Late in the evening the youth choir sings carols from 23:00, and at 23:30 the Christmas Mass begins with Mozart's Organ Solo Mass, K. 259, sung by soloists, the youth choir and the cathedral orchestra.
This is worship, and visitors are guests at it. Stay for the whole Mass once you sit down, stand and sit with the congregation, and keep phones away. The Christkindlmarkt outside closes at 15:00 that day.
Worth knowing
- Pair it with the 17:00 Silent Night commemoration in Oberndorf only if you have a car or a confirmed late train back, since the two fall on the same evening.
