Stand in front of the Silent Night Chapel at 17:00 on Christmas Eve if the carol is why you came to Salzburg. It's a commemoration with prayer, outdoors, and the square fills well before the start.

Silent Night was first sung in Oberndorf's church of St Nikola on the evening of 24 December 1818, after the Christmas Mass. Every Christmas Eve since 1953 people have gathered in front of the memorial chapel on that site at 17:00, and the carol is sung in many languages. It's a religious commemoration, so come to join in or stand quietly at the back.
Oberndorf lies on the Salzach about 20 kilometres north of Salzburg. The Silent Night Museum next to the chapel tells the story of Joseph Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber, and the town's Advent post office franks Christmas letters with a special postmark.
Worth knowing
- Visit on an Advent weekday too, when the square is quiet and the museum next door is the main draw.
